As Seniors moves into the next phase of their lives take a look on everything they've already lived through.

Take a look back with us through some of the most important moments in sports, pop culture, and history from the last 18 years – the lives of the Class of 2022.

2003

Sports: The Women’s World Cup was held in the USA and won by Germany.

Pop Culture: Teen surfer Bethany Hamilton was attacked by a shark, lost her arm, and a movie was made of her life. 

Historical: In the Iraq War, the US forces defeated the Iraqi Army and the Iraqi Republican Guard in the Battle of Baghdad.

 

2004

Sports: The Boston Red Sox win the World Series in baseball for the first time since 1918.

Pop Culture: Facebook was launched by Harvard sophomore Mark Zuckerberg, forever changing the way we communicate. 

Historical: The city of San Francisco, California begins issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in response to a directive from Mayor Gavin Newsom.

 

2005

Sports: Australian Open Women’s Tennis: In an all-American final Serena Williams wins her 2nd Australian title; beats Lindsay Davenport 2-6, 6-3, 6-0. 

Pop Culture: “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody” premieres on the Disney Channel, starring Dylan and Cole Sprouse. 

Historical: Condoleezza Rice is sworn in as U.S. Secretary of State, the first African American woman to hold the post. 

 

2006

Sports: XX Winter Olympic Games open in Turin, Italy, Luciano Pavarotti sings “Nessun Dorma” in his last ever performance. 

Pop Culture: “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” premieres at Disneyland and becomes the fastest film to gross over 1 billion. 

Historical: On the weekend of his 84th birthday, Fred Shuttlesworth gives his final sermon in front of 300 people at the Greater New Light Baptist Church. He was a Civil Rights activist. 

 

2007

Sports: Phil Jackson wins his 900th game as a head coach, becoming the fastest coach to reach 900 career wins. 

Pop Culture: Mar 29 Rihanna releases her hit single “Umbrella” featuring Jay-Z, goes to No. 1 on US Billboard Hot 100 for 7 weeks. 

Historical: The 110th United States Congress convenes and elects Nancy Pelosi as the first female Speaker of the House. Also, Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs announces the iPhone. 

 

2008

Sports: Usain Bolt breaks the world record in the 100m sprint, with a wind-legal (+1.7m/s) 9.72 seconds. 

Pop Culture: In 2008 Facebook surpassed Myspace as the most-visited social media website.  

Historical: David Blaine sets a new Guinness World Record for holding his breath underwater for 17 minutes 4-1/2 seconds on “The Oprah Winfrey Show”   or    Dmitry Medvedev appoints Vladimir Putin as Russian Prime Minister. 

 

2009

Sports: 58th NBA All-Star Game, US Airways Center, Phoenix, AZ: West beats East, 146-119. 

Pop Culture: Heath Ledger posthumously wins Academy Award, for Best Supporting Actor, for his performance as the Joker in “The Dark Knight”. 

Historical: Barack Obama, inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States of America, becomes the United States’ first African-American president. 

 

2010

Sports: LA Lakers forward Kobe Bryant becomes the youngest NBA player to reach 25,000 career points at 31 years, 151 days; beats Wilt Chamberlain by 35 days. 

Pop Culture: Toy Story 3″, directed by Lee Unkrich, premieres at the Taormina Film Fest in Italy and is the 1st animated film to earn 1 billion. 

Historical: US President Barack Obama signs the Affordable Care Act (ACA), nicknamed ‘Obamacare’, expanding the availability and affordability of health care insurance. 

 

2011

Sports: Super Bowl XLV, Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, TX: Green Bay Packers beat Pittsburgh Steelers, 31-25.

Pop Culture: “Game of Thrones”, based on the fantasy novel series by George R. R. Martin premieres on HBO.

Historical: After hiding for 16 years, Boston gangster Whitey Bulger is arrested outside an apartment in Santa Monica, California.

 

2012

Sports: LeBron James becomes the youngest player in NBA history to record 20,000 career points.

Pop Culture: “The Hunger Games” directed by Francis Lawrence premieres in Los Angeles the “The Avengers” also premiered. 

Historical: A SpaceX Dragon becomes the first commercial spacecraft to dock at the International Space Station. 

 

2013

Sports: Golfer Tiger Woods returns to his world number one ranking. 

Pop Culture: American rock band My Chemical Romance announce their break-up. 

Historical: Harper Lee files a lawsuit against a literary agent over the copyright of “To Kill a Mockingbird”. 

 

2014

Sports: Luis Suárez is charged with biting at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. 

Pop Culture: “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” premieres on NBC. 

Historical: Ukrainian Revolution of 2014 begins as protesters, riot police and unknown shooters take part in violent events in the capital, Kyiv, culminating after five days in the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych. 

 

2015

Sports: 17-year-old Lydia Ko of New Zealand becomes the youngest golfer in men’s or women’s golf history to be ranked No. 1 in the world. 

Pop Culture: See You Again” released by Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth. 

Historical: NASA’s Opportunity rover becomes the first to complete a Martian marathon. 

 

2016

Sports: Australian Women’s Tennis: Angelique Kerber of Germany beats Serena Williams.

Pop Culture: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” beats Avatar’s 760.5M for the box office record. 

Historical: Forbes Richest List released, Bill Gates No. 1 with $75 billion, number of world’s billionaires shrinks to 1,810.

 

2017

Sports: Christiano Ronaldo becomes the first player to score 100 goals in Champions League. 

Pop Culture: Adele wins Grammy for “Hello” and for “25”. 

Historical: Donald Trump was inaugurated into the presidential office.

 

 

2018

Sports: Olympic gymnast Simone Biles states that team doctor Larry Nassar abused her and over 130 other women in the USA Gymnastics program. 

Pop Culture: Amazon founder Jeff Bezos becomes the second man to have his net worth reach over 100 billion dollars. 

Historical: Space X launches Falcon Heavy, the world’s most powerful rocket.

 

2019

Sports: Lamar Jackson, a player for the Baltimore Ravens,  breaks Michael Vick’s 13-year-old rushing record. Jackson wins the MVP trophy as well. 

Pop Culture: at the Grammys, Dua Lip wins Best New Artist, “Sweetener” by Ariana Grande wins Best Pop Vocal Album, and “God’s Plan” by Drake wins Best Rap Song.

Historical: Donald Trump becomes the third president in history to be impeached.

 

2020

Sports:  Nearly every major sporting event in the U.S. was postponed due to Covid-19. 

Pop Culture: As the 2020 election drew closer, a large number of celebrities began pushing for younger people to vote, using ads and social media. 

Historical: Covid-19 spread throughout the world, starting a pandemic that closed schools and businesses, and brought a halt to normal daily life.  

 

2021

Sports: Many events postponed in 2020 occurred like the Olympics and Paralympics. 

Pop Culture: 2000s trends start coming back into fashion.

Historical: The capital was broken into and stormed.

2022

Sports: NFL quarterback Tom Brady announces his retirement, only to change his mind a few months later. 

Historical: First-ever heart transplant of a pig’s heart was successfully transplanted into a 58-year-old man. 

Pop Culture: The annual Met Gala was held, but many questioned the fashion that was hardly up to par with the event’s theme.
