Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson book cover.

Speak

Author: Laurie Halse Anderson

Published: 1999

Genre: Fiction; Young Adult

Reason for recommendation: Speak is a novel that covers the topic of rape and social exclusion in a non-glamorizing way. It gives details about rape victims that most people don’t learn about and does a fantastic job of showing how not telling anyone about what happened can cause people to spiral out of control. Speak also incorporates the way losing friends in a time of need can really impact the way a person handles simple things in everyday life.

Love and Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch book cover.

Love and Gelato

Author: Jenna Evans Welch

Published: May 13, 2016

Genre: Fiction; Young Adult; Romance

Reason for recommendation: Love and Gelato is a romance novel that doesn’t focus on the love life of the main character, but instead the love life of her mother. It shows Lina struggling to accept her new life, find her real father, and cope with the loss of her mother. The way the romance is shown in this book is unlike other romance novels because of the lack of sappiness and inclusion of different romantic actions. The story’s formatting is unique and assists the plot build up by creating a mysterious mood of discovery.

Shadow Falls by c.c. hunter book cover.

Shadow Falls: Born At Midnight

Author: C-C Hunter

Published: March 29, 2011

Genre: Fiction; Fantasy

Reason for recommendation: Born At Midnight is a fantasy novel that takes a different spin on the whole vampire/werewolf/supernatural idea. Though there is some romance included in the novel, the characterization and inclusion of supernatural qualities gives the story more importance than just who likes who. Since it is targeted towards teens and young adults, the author incorporated a piece of the conflict connected to a person finding themselves.

We Know It Was You by Maggie Thrash book cover.

We Know It Was You

Author: Maggie Thrash

Published: Oct 6, 2016

Genre: Fiction; Mystery; Young Adult; Thriller

Reason for recommendation: I recommend We Know It Was You because it has a unique perspective towards maybe different social topics. It also has many twists and turns as to what all had went down at the school after a girl supposedly committed suicide. The narrator of the story shares the feelings of many students at the school, giving different perspectives to every bad situation. The book also covers the topic of sexual assault in a new way, showing boys and girls that they must respect each other and neither one is specifically responsible for the problem, but that they both have an affect on sexual assault.
