A massive crowd of all ages rushes into the theaters, clutching tickets in their hands and walking down through the butter-scented halls. They grab popcorn, drinks, and candy and run to their seats, eagerly awaiting “A Minecraft Movie.”
The community had requested the Minecraft Movie for years, and it was announced to premiere on April 4.
The first trailer was released on Sept. 24, 2024.
People took to the internet to mock the trailers and casting. They made jokes about how bad the trailers and casting were.
This gave the movie a lot of exposure, even if it was bad publicity; it was still publicity.
The hype for the movie kept building, and many people wanted to see it. Whether it was as a joke or for people’s kids, millions of people saw it on the opening weekend.
I personally went just because of all the hype that was built around the movie.
“A Minecraft Movie” had a record-breaking opening weekend, bringing in $313.2 million globally. This was the best box office performance ever for a video game adaptation film.
It surpassed the previous record holder, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”
With the popularity came some chaotic crowds. Popcorn and drinks were spilled or thrown during

Certain scenes and animals were brought into theaters.
The chaos that was caused reached national news headlines, allowing the movie to gain even more attention.
“A lot of young kids were coming into the theater and being obnoxious and noisy,” senior Bryce Keller, who also works at Regal Cinemas, said.
The movie itself has received mixed reviews. The game is 16 years old and has a mixed audience when it comes to age.
Making it a kids’ movie was loved by some and hated by others.
Many people were fans of the animations and wanted the entire film to be animated, rather than the mix of live action and animation.
Despite the live action, the animations in the film were incredible. They effectively brought the Minecraft feeling to the big screen.
“Best movie ever,” senior Traeh Smith said.
But the plot was questionable and hard to follow.
The movie was exactly what I expected it to be. Just a kids’ movie with not much of a story.
It was all over the place and didn’t align with the game very well, and it seemed like a cash grab.
Many others thought the same. The movie was more for the experience than watching an actual good movie.
It was for people who wanted a fun experience with friends or wanted to reminisce on childhood experiences.
“You have to turn off your brain to like it,” Keller said.
The experience at the theater itself is pretty fun. With people clapping and cheering, it brings the theater to life and takes away some of the boredom.
The cameos from multiple people in the Minecraft community and a heartwarming reference to Minecraft YouTuber Technoblade, who passed away from cancer in 2022, made the experience much better.
It showed that the creators did care about the community, which was appreciated by many.
The movie received A 48% on Rotten Tomatoes. Which means 48% of the reviews for the movie were positive.
Despite the low ratings, Thanks to the community and social media, it was a massive box office success.
The opening weekend was so successful that rumors of a sequel have been circling.
Overall, the movie has a 9/10 experience, but a 4/10 plot.
Whether you’ve been a fan of Minecraft since day one or never even heard of the game, “A Minecraft Movie” is a great and memorable theater experience if you can get past the bad plot.
