Shannon Werner- Unified Track and Field
Working as a coach on the team for three years, Dallastown gym teacher Shannon Werner is in the process of her first season as head coach for the Unified Track and Field team. Werner manages the team with Mrs. Lowery, Mr. Myers, and Mrs. Wolfe, all who work as assistant coaches.
“Unified Track is all about inclusion and everyone cheering on everyone else,” said Werner. “[Our goal for the 2021 season is] to create a culture of inclusion so when the partners and athletes see each other in the hallway, they have a connection.”
Though only a coach on the team for three years, Werner has had her share of monumental moments with the team. “I will never forget our first meet three years ago during the first heat of the 100 [meter dash], I started crying because I was just overcome by the emotions of everyone cheering,” Werner states.
Because of COVID-19 and school closures, Werner and the Unified Track and Field team organized a few zoom meetings to continue contact with the participants. “The only challenges for this year are that some of the returning participants that last year was their first year, it’s like they are starting over.” Werner added.
Unified Track and Field isn’t your typical Dallastown spring sport. Werner and the team invite you to check out the team and come to a meet or too!
