Junior Nigel Joseph grew up surrounded by music, and he still is.

He has been singing since the age of 5, began violin in third grade, and has played piano since age 8.

“I used to sing with my parents and family at church,” said Joseph. “From there I took lessons… and now am singing many different types of pieces and it makes me feel happy and connected to others.”

Starting at 7 years old, Joseph has taken voice lessons with multiple teachers over the years.

Currently, he is taking lessons from Lisa Pantano, the Director of Pastoral Music at Saint Patrick Catholic Church.

Joseph has reaped the benefits of his hard work over the past few years: making it to districts his freshman year, going to districts and regionals as a sophomore, and successfully auditioning all the way to states this year.

“The festival for states was the best that it could be this year,” Joseph said about the Zoom festival that was held in the place of a normal State festival this year. “I feel I received the same amount of instruction but a lot less connection. Despite this, I saw a lot of support, encouragement, and gratitude.”

He is involved in the York Youth Symphony Orchestra, York County Senior Honors Choir, community and church singing, and plays piano at nursing homes with his piano teacher.

Joseph says, “One of my favorite pieces is definitely Nessun Dorma. It sounds very beautiful, and it moved me into more classical music.”
