For Allison Hartman, sophomore, life is all about balance.

She has kept herself busy with Varsity Cross Country, Varsity Track and Field, serving on a committee for Dallastown’s Mini-THON, playing violin in the York Youth Symphony Orchestra, and violin lessons with Venona Detrick the past eight years.

“This is my second year auditioning for PMEA Districts but my first year auditioning successfully,” says Hartman.

Riding that wave, she continued on to audition successfully for States!

There was no PMEA Districts festival this year, but All-State was held virtually as best they could.

Hartman said, “PMEA still plans on giving us our state medals to recognize our accomplishments and all the hard work that was put into the auditions.”

During the State festival, students were able to listen and ask questions to college professors about their schools’ music programs – Hartman’s favorite part of the festival.

“I thought this was a cool way to mix up the virtual festival,” said Hartman. “It gave the musicians a chance to learn about different colleges and universities and their music programs, whether for majors or non-majors.”

Hartman says she was inspired to play the violin by her older cousin who also plays and was the only string player in the extended family.

Her favorite piece is this year’s All-State festival piece, Dvorak’s Carnival Overture, because of the challenge that the fast tempos provide and the high level of musicality required.
