“I consider the role to be a key communicator between our administrators, our principals, and our teachers, our departments,” explained Rebekay McCauley, the head of the English department for the last four years.

In 2015, McCauley trained with the former department head before taking on the responsibilities herself.  While communication is key, she is also required to work on scheduling and

“If teachers have ideas of new courses they want to propose they would come to me first and discuss those options with me and we’ll work together to generate ideas,”McCauley commented about the scheduling and organization of new classes.

Furthermore, she explained some of the specific budget and resource needs of the English department.  “We have lots of book choices and curricular decisions and we build classroom libraries in our rooms. . .We’re a resource rich department.”

Ultimately, the job of the department chair is to be a communicator and “a support,” as McCauley explained, which is her favorite part of her job.

“I think it’s exciting to work with people and collaborate and brainstorm and problem solve !  That’s a lot of what I like about the role,” she elaborated.
