Neil Gutekunst- Varsity Track and Field

In his 27 year coaching, York Suburban teacher and Dallastown graduate Neil Gutekunst is leading his seventh year as head coach of Dallastown’s Track and Field team. He coaches alongside 11 assistant coaches: Doug Moyer, Tracy Myers, Cody Messersmith, Mike Gillis, Brady Altland, Zack Calaman, Mike Schuler, Tom Melhorn, Michelle Brabham, Julie Granger, and Rebecca Gross.

Gutekunst was a member of the track and field team in high school and then continued his track career at Dickinson College.

“Track and Field is a sport where everyone has the opportunity to participate and to improve,” Gutekunst says. “It’s my responsibility to make sure that every athlete has that opportunity.”

Two years ago, Dallastown hosted the first annual Ray Geesey Invitational with Coach Ray Geesey and other Dallastown Track Alums. Though that remains one of his favorite coaching memories, Gutekunst says, “I have too many wonderful memories to discuss. I have had the opportunity to work with so many outstanding athletes and coaches.”

Like everyone else, the Track and Field had an unexpected end to the season in March 2020. It was the first spring in 33 years that Gutekunst was not involved with Track as a participant or a coach. “It was very difficult for me, but it was so painful for the Seniors.” Gutekunst added. “We had many seniors last year who had been in the program since 7th grade. That was tough.”

This year, Gutekunst has recognized that all the athletes are working hard to train for meets and invitationals tnd wants all athletes who lost a season last year to have plenty of opportunities to compete this season.

Coach Gutekunst leaves his athletes with this message: “Be grateful for and make the most of every opportunity that you have.”
