Hoping to continue playing music beyond high school, junior Jacob Appleby participates in many advanced music ensembles.
Appleby participates in the marching band, where he serves as one of the brass music captains; jazz ensemble, brass ensemble, symphonic orchestra, and concert band.
He also participates in district band and district jazz, which are auditioned ensembles that take select musicians from schools around the area.
Beyond music, he is also a member of the NHS, MU Alpha Theta, and the varsity swimming team.
Music has played an integral part in Appleby’s life and helped him to be where he is today.
“I really like the people I’ve met through music and the opportunities it’s provided me for stepping out of my comfort zone and developing my leadership.”
Appleby’s main instrument is the trumpet, and there are many reasons as to why.
“I like a lot of things about the trumpet. I like that we play the melody a lot and we can do a lot of things [participate in many ensembles], like trumpet can do jazz band, and I think it’s fun that I see or hear the trumpet in songs.”
After high school, Appleby plans to major in mechanical engineering and hopes to continue playing.
“If I can play trumpet, I will,” he said. “I know mech-E is often really intensive in terms of class load, but I hope to do marching band.”
