I find myself re-watching movies and TV shows over and over again n0 matter how many times I may have seen them before.
Every night before I go to sleep, watching shows I know and love calms me and helps me relax after a long day.
After researching, it seems like a lot of other people do the same thing.
There is a lot of research showing why people chose to re-watch shows instead of picking something new. People with ADHD, Anxiety, and other mental illnesses/ disorders, tend to watch something over again instead of something new because it makes them feel comforted and satisfied.
Whenever I’m stressed, or upset, I know I will be able to relax knowing what is going to happen to the characters, instead of starting something new and not knowing what could happen.
In a Psychology Today article titled “Why We Watch the Same Shows Over and Over,” writer Robert N. Kraft, Ph.D. says that too much choice can be overwhelming.
“The psychologist Barry Schwartz found that the more options we’re offered, the less satisfied we are with our choices–the paradox of choice. An overwhelming array of options creates anxiety and dissatisfaction, ultimately leading to avoiding choosing.”
Music can have the same effect.
Listening to a certain song helps to remember the past and have that sense of nostalgia. Remembering the past in such a specific and unique way can create a sense of relief for each person.
I tend to do the same thing especially listening to the same song many times because it makes me feel better, it is a way for expressing emotions about something that may have happened or just wanting to remember the past.
“We rewatch old movies because they allow us to relive a time we remember with fondness. We have the same experience when listening to radio stations that play songs from a particular decade,” Kraft said.
Most of the shows and movies that people re-watch are during times when they maybe need something that they know they will enjoy, just like when you need to listen to your favorite song after a long day, or maybe a great day it is always comforting to listen, or watch something that can make you feel better.
Other research says repetition works for adults too and “bestows order and safety, especially during times when our lives feel uncomfortably less controlled.”
Some of the most re-watched shows are “The Office”, “Friends”, “Breaking Bad”, and “Game of Thrones.”
The one of the shows that I choose to rewatch the most is “Bob’s Burgers.” I find the show very funny and interesting so I love to watch it when i need a sense of comfort or relief.
Everyone has at least one movie or show that they love to re-watch.
From time to time it is nice to switch it up and watch something new, but overall it is much nicer to watch something that you have watched before for a feeling of comfort.
